Mixed-Use Spa Development

Mixed-Use

Year 3 Semester 2

Individual Project

Within the repetitive nature of traditional spas, users undergo the process of vasoconstriction and dilation. However, people often stick to a circulation cycle they’re more comfortable with - e.g. duration, temperature.

This project deals with the psychological cycles of user comfort in the aqua healing process. The design intent aims to break the cycle of comfort through the provision of varied permutations branching out from a central space. These permutations respond to the temperature and privacy preferences of the user.

The main space infiltrates the permutations in a hierarchy of public and private realms. Private bath spaces are directed to enjoy the offerings of the site. Design features include a glass bottomed pool space with cascading water curtains. Fragmented spaces bridge public and private, to encourage user circulation in the process of finding their comfort zone.

The site intervention deals with transforming the existing user utility and merging it with a response to the program space. Visual permeability bridges the internal layers for the connection of differing served spaces.
